While you’ll never run out of things to do in the capital, sometimes you feel like escaping from the city for a day and the UK certainly isn’t short of day trip destinations. And because Europe is so close not only can you day trip to other parts of England, you could also jump on the Eurostar and head to France or Belgium for a day out in style!
To get you started on some ideas I have listed some of the most popular day trips from London below.
UK Day Tours From London
Brighton Day Trips – Only a two hour drive or train journey, Brighton is the UK’s most famous seaside destination. You’ll probably have heard of the infamous pebbled beaches and they actually aren’t that bad – so head down on a warm summers day for fish and chips and a dip in the sea – and don’t forget to have a laugh at all the pale Brits burning themselves to a crisp! National Rail and National Express run multiple services daily.
Stonehenge Day Trips – There are many organised day tours from London leaving each day to Stonehenge, so it’s very easy to organise a day trip by yourself or with friends. These could well be the world’s most famous rocks and have been here since 1600 BC so you definitely want to check them out while you’re living in London.
Oxford Day Trips – Beautiful in both winter and summer, Oxford is a great day trip from London. Wander through the University grounds and halls and jump on a punting boat on the river before heading to the pubs. Only an hour from London by train or ‘Oxford tube’ – the city’s express bus service.
Cambridge Day Trips – If you visit Oxford, then I’d definitely recommend visiting their rival Cambridge too! Some people have a distinct favourite, so you can make up your mind after checking out the University grounds here. A little further out than Oxford, you can still easily reach here by train or bus in around 1.5 hours.
The Cotswolds Day Trips – The Cotswolds are an absolutely stunning part of England, located approximately two hours from London. There are loads of little villages (Tetbury is particularly gorgeous) and towns to stop and walk around in, and if you hire a car you can spend a day at your leisure stopping for a pub lunch and then afternoon tea which is a must…you’ll be ready for a bed by the time you get home!
Europe Day Tours From London
Paris Day Trips – Say no more! Paris is an absolute must see while you’re living in London. It’s certainly doable in a day if you want to zip around on an open top bus and see the main sights, but it’s a city best taken in over a couple of days if you have the time. Travelling by Eurostar is a great way to do it as you’ll get dropped right in the centre of the city rather than having to make your way from the airport. From there you can join a tour or walk at your leisure to check out the Eiffel tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre and eat as many macaroons as your heart desires! For cheap ferry crossings, Sea France are a good company to use.
Brussels Day Trips– Also very accessible by Eurostar or plane, Brussels is famed for its beer, ‘frites’ and mussels. Spend a morning wandering the city’s squares then find yourself a pub to drink and eat the afternoon away!
Lille Day Trips – Lille, a city in the North of France comes alive over the winter when it’s Christmas market opens in November. Ferris wheels, lights and lots of mulled wine make this a great day trip – and you can pick up some cool gifts for your friends and family back home. The easiest way to travel to Lille is by Eurostar, which takes around 1.5 hours from Kings Cross.
